Campaign target processing and exclusion rules

Written by Managers

When gathering targets for your campaigns, you may notice some discrepancies between the expected number of targets and the actual audience size. These variations are common and can occur due to several factors related to filtering criteria, campaign management, or platform-specific behaviors.

Note: Most critical information for campaign target processing is available by clicking "Detailed View" in the Audience step during campaign creation.

Key Reasons for target count discrepancies

Filtering criteria and exclusions

  • 1st, or 2nd+3rd degree Connections: Depending on your Inbound/Outbound campaign settings, certain profiles will be excluded from the campaign. Outbound campaigns exclude 1st connections, while Inbound campaigns exclude 2nd+3rd degreee connections.

  • Out-of-Network Profiles: Certain profiles cannot be found on Linkedin by your selected search account. This is very important for Search and Sales Navigator campaigns.

  • Exclusion settings: Depending on your campaign settings - you may be excluding leads that are already enrolled in another Aimfox campaign. Please review your settings during campaign creation to make sure you are indeed targeting the audience you want. You can learn more in our Target Management article.

Campaign Management

  • Draft Campaigns: Creating multiple draft campaigns will lock their targets to those campaigns, making them automatically excluded for other campaigns. You can delete excess draft campaigns to free up their targets, or manage your Exclusion settings to include targets that are already enrolled in other campaigns.

  • Custom List Campaigns / CSV Uploads: When you upload a list, our system first needs to parse it for valid LinkedIn URLs, and then get the targets from LinkedIn. During these steps, it's possible that some targets will be considered invalid. For example, certain rows in your CSV can be incorrectly formatted (linkein.com, linkedin.co, linnkedin.com, etc), or those accounts could have been deleted from LinkedIn since you prepared your CSV.

  • Campaign maximum targets: Even though LinkedIn shows you the total number of results for a Search - it will only ever return a maximum of 1000 targets, or 2500 for search campaigns.

Best Practices for Managing Campaign Audiences

  1. Review your filtering criteria: Understand what happened with all of your targets during campaign creation by clicking "View Details" in the Audience screen.

  2. Optimize your draft campaigns: Avoid creating unnecessary drafts to prevent accidentally locking leads.

  3. Leverage Inbound and Outbound Campaigns: Use Inbound and Outbound campaigns to target exactly who you want.
